Stages to the Bible Translation Process
STAGE 1 - DRAFTING: The process begins with an initial draft of the chosen scripture by the translator.
STAGE 2 - TEAM REVIEW: The initial draft is discussed with other translators during the team review. During this process the draft is back-translated, and the team’s notes for improvement are given to individuals who are knowledgeable in the Scriptures and the Lakota language.
STAGE 3 - COMMUNITY TESTING: The draft is taken to the Lakota-speaking community. Lakota speakers listen to the translation and answer questions. The answers we receive will help us see areas for further improvement and clarification. The subsequent revision produces another draft.
STAGE 4 - CONSULTANT CHECKING: This draft is discussed with translation consultants from the United Bible Societies and/or American Bible Society. More edits are made and the resulting final translation is approved for final publication.
